Introducing March's Coffee of the Month: Costa Rica Hot Springs

Shaylea

If you love coffee, then you know that every month is a chance to discover new and exciting flavors. This March, we are thrilled to highlight our featured selection: Costa Rica's Terrazzo Hot Springs. Renowned for its innovative coffee processing methods, Costa Rica consistently impresses with its dedication to providing exceptional coffee. Let’s explore the remarkable qualities of this month's selection.

The Unique Hot Spring Water Process

Costa Rica is a leader in coffee processing techniques, and the Hot Spring Water method is a standout example. This technique uses natural thermal mineral water to ferment pulped coffee, improving both flavor and health benefits.

At the San Diego wet mill, thermal spring water helps break down the mucilage in coffee cherries. This process is essential for achieving the cup clarity that coffee lovers treasure.

Additionally, the beans absorb the natural minerals in the spring water. This boosts flavor complexity, resulting in a cup that is a delight to the senses. Expect vibrant fruit notes typical of the Tarrazú region, complemented by subtle spicy undertones. For instance, you may find hints of citrus, like orange and lemon, alongside a touch of cinnamon.

A Closer Look at the Tarrazú Region

Tarrazú is more than just a location; it's the backbone of Costa Rica's coffee production. In 2021, this region produced over 25% of the country’s total coffee output. Renowned for its exceptional acidity and full body, Tarrazú received Denomination of Origin status in 2019, defining its unique flavor profile.

Coffee from this region grows at altitudes above 1,600 meters. The ideal conditions—a mix of red clay soil, humidity, and an average temperature of 24ºC—create the perfect environment for cultivating high-quality coffee. The focus here is on both quantity and quality, making our selection from Tarrazú particularly noteworthy.

Visit to Beneficio San Diego

For fans of Costa Rican coffee, Beneficio San Diego is a well-known name. Founded in 1888, it is recognized as the most modern mill in the country, consistently pushing boundaries in quality and efficiency.

Beneficio San Diego is committed not only to creating exceptional coffee but also to building strong community ties and sustainable practices. It specializes in coffees from the Tarrazú and Tres Ríos regions, maintaining high standards for both quality and environmental responsibility.

Why Costa Rican Green Coffee Reigns Supreme

To appreciate our selected coffee, it’s important to mention the significance of Costa Rican green coffee. The Strictly Hard Bean (SHB) classification represents coffee grown at altitudes of 1,200 meters or higher. This altitude allows the cherries to mature slowly, leading to unique flavors and distinct acidity.

This careful growing process ensures that with every cup, coffee lovers receive a premium product. For example, coffee labeled SHB often exhibits bright notes and a full body that elevate the overall tasting experience.

Flavor Profile: Experience the Complexity

When tasting Costa Rica's Terrazzo Hot Springs, your palate will be treated to an exciting array of flavors. The cup features an impressive balance of acidity and body.

You will discover festive fruit notes typical of Tarrazú coffee—imagine bright citrus and tropical hints. These are enhanced by spices, creating a unique and unforgettable flavor profile. Each sip offers a taste of the lush landscapes and mineral-rich soils of Costa Rica.

Brewing Recommendations for the Ultimate Experience

To fully enjoy the complexity of our Costa Rica Hot Springs coffee, I recommend using a pour-over method. This brewing style highlights the clarity and brightness of the flavors.

Here’s how I brew it:

  1. Grind the Beans: Aim for a medium to fine grind for optimal extraction.

  2. Water Temperature: Heat your water to around 90-95ºC before pouring over the grounds.

  3. Bloom: Pour a small amount of water over the coffee grounds and let it bloom for 30 seconds.

  4. Pour: Slowly pour the remaining water in a circular motion for even extraction.

  5. Enjoy: Let it steep for 2-3 minutes before serving.

Every sip should be an experience that connects you to the essence of Costa Rican coffee culture.

Celebrate Good Coffee

March’s selection of Costa Rica Terrazzo Hot Springs transcends a simple beverage; it invites you to appreciate the rich traditions and origins of coffee. With its unique processing method, the commitment to quality from the Tarrazú region, and the dedication at Beneficio San Diego, each cup tells a remarkable story.

As coffee lovers, let's take a moment to celebrate this month’s selection. Enjoy the diverse flavors and rich history found in every cup. Cheers to enhancing our coffee experience, one sip at a time!
